Ryker is my adorably sweet goofball who joined Ehana from Ros and Col Seare of Theladroy Kennels.
Ryker was my second lappie and so very different to what I was expecting. He was flown from Qld up to Darwin and I distinctly remember the afternoon we picked him up from the airport. We heard a dog barking from across the tarmac and joked that it would be ours, sure enough as the crate was wheeled in to the collection bay, Ryker was the smallest puppy there but the loudest one by far! Luckily, he only wanted to announce his arrival and he soon settled in with our family.
Ryker has a soft and friendly nature, he just adores being loved by his family and being around his pack. I often joke that he is a bit of an airhead as at times, he can be seen waving his mane majestically in the afternoon breeze with a big cheesy grin on his face just contemplating how fabulous he looks, a trait that has earned him the nickname 'Zoolander'.
Ryker doesn’t have a high drive personality and instead prefers to have casual outings with his lappie lady friends or tag along for adventures with the family (he’s travelled around over half of Australia!). In his youth, he wasn’t overly motivated by most things (food toys etc) but really loved to run and would do cartwheels if he heard the jangle of his walking lead, although adding Vader into the mix certainly sparked his appetite! Nowadays, he'd give you his kidneys for a mere crumb. He’s very intelligent, extremely loyal and is generally a very chilled out fellow, although he can get a bit verbal and will give you a little paw nudge if you’ve stopped scratching his head or chest, by verbal I don't mean barking, I mean talking...he actually sounds like he's making words.
He’s a smaller male with a nice compact body, a very soft and sweet expression and a mass of coat. Ryker gained his Australian Championship title in Darwin in 2014 and after having a break from showing while we moved to Sydney and settled back in, has proven that he can play with the big kids in the city too taking a number of BOB’s, class in group and show as well as a runner up best in group against some strong competition.
My little airhead also managed to earn himself the coveted honor of being named the Finnish Lapphund Club of NSW Show Dog of the Year for 2016, after blitzing the competition, it was something I was extremely proud of! Not to out do himself, he also walked away with the Dogz Online NSW Finnish Lapphund Show Dog of the Year for 2017, not bad considering we'd only entered 9 shows all year!
He amassed over 500 points throughout his showing career, it was slow going as we didn't have many lappies hitting the showrings back in those days, but he definitely had some notable wins along the way. He has travelled all over Australia, visiting all our famous landmarks, beaches and eateries. He has been an absolutely fabulous breed ambassador, still performing public relations duties at 11 years old, and I couldn't even tell you the number of people who have brought a lappie into their lives thanks to Ryker. He's the best camping buddy and such a sweet soul.
Ryker passed his Herding Instinct Test in 2016 and dabbled in various other sports such as lure coursing, rally, tricks and various training endeavours. He's mostly retired now and enjoys being my sous chef and guinea pig for various raw recipes, my local cafe buddy or helping me master new training or massage techniques.
