Diaz is the dog I’d always hoped for but never expected.
It’s no secret that I adore Vader, she’s my everything. We’d never planned on Vader having a third litter, but as time passed it became more and more obvious that I needed a young dog. Vader was a veteran and Ryker was nearly 10, which meant we were becoming quite limited in what we could do with them, and losing touch with the breed community. If we were going to keep something, I wanted it to be from my black shadow.
I had lots of grand plans for males I thought would make lovely matches for Vader, but some of them just weren’t possible or never came to fruition. I had a good idea on the kinds of traits, mannerisms and general looks that Vader threw to her kids, as I’d watched them mature over the years. She’d been used with two very very different males, but there were obvious similarities amongst the litters.
Eventually I settled on Ärri (Eisenfest Massey Ferguson) who we had collected semen from a number of years prior. I felt his general appearance and softer expression complimented Vaders looks but hoped he’d bring a little more strength (bone) and some stronger rear ends…a touch of his lovely movement wouldn’t go astray either! I’d seen that outcome achieved throughout his pedigree in other combinations so felt like he would give us a really good shot at something special. And when his owners tell you they’ve owned 5 dogs over the years from within his pedigree, but Ärri has been their absolute heart dog out of all them…how can you say no to combining two dogs with such an impact on their families!
As Vader was 7.5 at the time, it was unlikely that the AI would be successful…but I hoped and crossed everything. When we saw 4 little skeletons on her X-ray, I did a massive happy dance with lots of tears!
We had rubbed her belly and placed our order for a girl…it would have been nice if she was PRA clear and black and tan too. The first puppy arrived, black and tan male. The second puppy arrived, solid black male. The third puppy arrived, solid black male. We had started to lose hope…but then, out came the fourth puppy, a black and tan GIRL! It was very exciting but I curbed my enthusiasm as we still had a long way to go. Her litter theme was ‘Detective Slash Genuis’ a play on the TV show Brooklyn 99, so she was dubbed ‘Detective Rosa Diaz’.
As each milestone was hit, she kept smashing them out of the park, I kept waiting for something bad to pop up but it never did. Completely clear DNA panel, clear eye check, her movement got nicer each week, even our canine chiro cited “this is the most beautifully structured dog you’ve ever put on my table!”…if that’s not what you want to hear, I don’t know what is! As my own assessments rolled around it became apparent that she wasn’t going anywhere, her structure was superb. Her littermates were also beautifully built, it was a lovely consistent litter, but Diaz was just the standout on all fronts. Everything I’d hoped for and then some.
She’s an absolute character, full of hilarity and with a tongue that has a complete mind of its own…it pelts you with enthusiasm and such force that you don’t know what hit you! She can almost hold a conversation with you and will talk along…she’s not a barker, more of a talker and it almost seems like she can enunciate words on occasion. She’s so fast and so full of joy and is the most dog social dog I’ve ever owned. The way she can tailor her play style between a 15 year old veteran, all the way down to boosting the confidence of a 4 week old puppy, is truely breathtaking to watch. She’s squiggly and bouncy and watching the way she floats as she moves is mesmerising.
In the short time she’s been with us, we’ve travelled all over Victoria, up the coast to NSW and QLD, moved house, attended seminars and workshops and been involved in all kinds of breed promotion events such as the Dog Lovers Show and Melbourne Royal. We train in agility and tricks, have begun working on Rally-O, scent work, herding and training for sled sports. She’s competed and trained in sprint dog/lure coursing and is already following in her mum’s footsteps earning the first level of the DMWYD trick titles.
Whilst her love is for sports over the show ring, that hasn’t stopped her from accomplishing her Australian Champion title, with some awesome wins along the way. She’s earned a number of 10 point + best of breed wins, some over grand champions(!), along with a notable Baby Puppy of Breed at the Melbourne Royal! What spins her dials is anything nose related, so we’ll look to add tracking in the not-so-distant future.
Diaz is our first Ehana bred dog that we’ve kept ourselves, and it’s a truly special feeling. Knowing that you were there when she took her first breath in this world, and have helped her develop in to the dog she is today, words can’t describe how emotional it is. She’s truly everything I could have wanted, I feel blessed to share this world with her and can’t wait to see what kind of adventures we have together.
